Construction underway on new Wellington CBD development

Construction is now underway on the Victoria Street Development in Wellington. The collaboration between Wellington City Council and developer Luigi Muollo, director of Cook Strait Properties seeks to create a “desirable destination” out of the Victoria Street, Lombard Lane, and Denton Park area of Wellington CBD. The existing buildings on this site are currently mid-demolition.

Jasmax is working with Cook Strait Properties to design this new development, which will include retail space on Victoria Street and Lombard Lane road frontages, and a new face facing out to Denton Park. The second storey of the development will be developed into a commercial office premises. Jasmax’s concept drawings provide an idea as to what the exciting new area will look like.

Mr Muollo anticipates that the retail spaces will be leased by a mixture of high street and boutique retailers. While he is silent on who will be moving in, sources suggest Top Shop or Zara are likely candidates, as these international fashion chains are rumoured to have been on the lookout for retail space in Wellington for a number of months.

To assist in the transformation of the area, the Wellington City Council will also undertake redevelopment of Denton Park and Bond Street. This will include enlarging and redesigning Denton Park, and upgrading Bond Street into a shared space for both pedestrians and motorists, with vehicle access to Cuba St.

This is an great project for Wellington City, as it will significantly improve an area of the CBD that has needed fresh development for a number of years.
