Be on the lookout for a new scam that is targeting the residential building industry. The scammers, believed to be based in Nigeria, have hacked builders’ email accounts and are sending bogus invoices to clients, with instructions to pay the money into a different account than usual.
The scam has claimed thousands of dollars off unsuspecting homeowners, who are left feeling foolish and out of pocket. Victims of the scam have stated that the bogus invoices they have received are identical to legitimate invoices previously issued.
The ingenuity of the scammers is that they are targeting an industry which has made every effort to facilitate cashflow. The consequences of not promptly responding to payment claims are well known and you can forgive homeowners for trying to comply with their obligations.
If your builder asks you to make payments into a different account seek confirmation whether this is the case (preferably not over a compromised email account) before you make any payment.
