Plans have been announced for a full-scale temporary replica of the Shakespearean Globe Theatre to be built in Auckland. The theatre will seat up to 900 people in a circular structure which is an exact copy of the original theatre in Britain.
The three-level Pop-Up Globe will be in a council-owned carpark, now re-named Bard’s Yard, behind the Q Theatre at 38 Greys Avenue.
This announcement continues the recent trend for events to be based in temporary structures that are removed once the event is finished, another example of this are the ice skating rinks that travel around the country.
Temporary structures will pose interesting challenges for Councils when assessing building consent applications and the consenting process may cause frustrating delays for the promoters. However, there is little doubt that it will provide an amazing experience while the structure is in place.
