Rain and strong winds are thought to be the cause of a crane recently falling on the densely occupied Grand Mosque in the Muslim holy city of Mecca. Tragically at least 107 people are thought to have been killed in the crash, which occurred while the Mosque was filled with worshipers. Approximately 230 are thought to be injured in the crash and subsequent stampede.
The annual Hajj pilgrimage will commence soon, where around two million people from around the world will journey to the site. The imminent annual pilgrimage makes safety concerns of this magnitude even more concerning.
In response to the crash an investigation is being carried out, as well as an inquiry into the safety standards of the holy site. It will be interesting to see the outcome of the reports, and any recommendations for safety in such a large public area. Click here to read more.
