Fulton Hogan has been awarded an $89.9 million contract for the maintenance of a huge tract of West Coast highway.
This is a new approach for road maintenance in this area for three key reasons:
- It consolidates a number of smaller contracts into one. This contract will cover from Mokihinui (north of Westport) right down to Haast Pass, and includes inland state highway routes to Arthur’s Pass and Lewis Pass.
- The term of the contract is 7 years, whereas past contracts in this area were re-tendered every 3 years.
- The contract is “performance-based”, and the contractor’s performance will be assessed annually.
The NZTA is hoping these changes will translate into cost savings. It has been reported that Fulton Hogan will partner with local companies Westreef, Westroads and MBD Contracting, as well as the area’s current engineering provider, Opus. The contract is set to begin on 1 September 2015.
