With construction set to begin in September, the detailed design work for the Huntly section of the Waikato Expressway is roaring ahead. The public can even cruise through the proposed $458 million section already, with the NZTA animation linked here.
As reported in the Waikato Times, the design and construction contract for the Huntly section has been awarded this month to a consortium consisting of Fulton Hogan, HEB Construction and Jacobs and Opus International Consultants. This will make up 15.2km of the 102km new Waikato Expressway, running from the northern Ohinewai section in the north to the Ngaruawahia section in the south.
Due for completion in 2019, the development is intended to improve the safety of this road, which is currently reported to be the highest risk road in New Zealand, seeing 30 serious injury crashes and 11 fatalities between 2006-2011.
