A positive economy reversing the ‘brain drain’

For years the case has been that New Zealand has been suffering a ‘brain drain’, with many of its qualified workforce choosing to emigrate across the ditch to pursue warmer climates and (generally) higher wages in Australia.

Now with New Zealand’s recent positive economic growth, the increased demand for workers in the Christchurch rebuild, and the Auckland housing market, New Zealand has been actively recruiting workers from Australia – either Australians, or New Zealanders wishing to return home – to fill the shortages in the job market.

The government is predicting 50,000 new jobs over the next two years, so New Zealand is currently holding its first-ever job expo in Australia, aiming to reach workers in certain specific professions such as construction, hospitality, healthcare, and IT, to accommodate the forecast growth.

The expo’s have been well-attended so far, with 1600 people attending the first expo in Perth last weekend. Expo’s will also be held in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane over the coming weeks.
