Figures recently released by Environment Canterbury (ECan) show that over the last four months show that dust from construction works is the leading cause of high pollution readings in the area.
The National standard is to have no more than three high pollution days per annum by 2016, and only one by 2020. In the four months surveyed Canterbury recorded between 10-12 high pollution days, indicating the government target is still a long way off.
Residents have complained around the nuisance caused by the dust and ECan has commissioned a report from GNS Science to determine the composition of the dust.
Although there is no specific plan to address this issue it may be prudent for builders and construction managers to consider potential implications this may have in future.
