While employment opportunities overall in New Zealand have maintained momentum in June with a 13.7 per cent increase in new job ad volumes compared with the same period last year. The data from SEEK New Zealand has revealed that this growth in job ads was underpinned by demand in the construction sector. The number of construction roles available in New Zealand increased by 51 percent and design and architecture by 38 percent during the same period.
These statistics seem to suggest that the current growth in the New Zealand economy is being driven by growth in the construction industry. This also appears to be wider than just the headline Canterbury and Auckland growth, with Wellington also seeing growth of 49% in the number of construction roles year on year.
This significant growth will lead to some new challenges for the industry as current resources are stretched there will be renewed focus on ensuring projects are delivered on budget, by the due date for completion and to a high standard of quality.
