Heavy rainfall in Christchurch has resulted in severe flooding particularly in the worst earthquake-damaged areas, such as the Flockton Basin which sank by up to half a metre.
The latest idea being proposed and tested by the Christchurch City Council is to apply a waterproof membrane around the outside of homes to prevent the water from entering. At $15,000 to $20,000 per house, the Council hopes that insurers will see this is a realistic option.
There are some obvious questions – Isn’t this a short term expensive fix? Why not prevent the flooding in the first place? Let us know what you think.
