The Government is planning to spend $87million upgrading 5 prisons around the country (read the news article here). The upgrades to Invercargill, Whanganui, Tongariro, Waikeria and Rolleston are intended to upgrade staff facilities, improve seismic strengthening and improve educational resources. Work at Invercargill prison began last month and prisoners are expected to be offered opportunities to be work on the project providing employment experience.
The upgrades are designed to help achieve the Government’s goal of reducing reoffending by 25% by 2017. To achieve this the Minister believes a greater focus needs to be on equipping prisoners with the skills needed to help them operate after their release. This includes drug and alcohol rehabilitation and employment based training.
Work on these prison upgrades is intended to be completed by the end of 2016.
