Update on New Zealand’s support for solar power

Hot on the heels of Foreign Minister Murray McCully’s announcement last week on New Zealand’s support of solar energy in Samoa (read the blog post here), over the weekend Mr McCully visited the site of New Zealand funded Te Mana o te Ra solar array in Rarotonga.

The contract for constructing the solar array in Rarotonga has been awarded to New Zealand Company Infratec Renewables Limited, however significant parts of the construction and electrical works will be carried out by Cook Island subcontractors.

Once completed, the solar array will generate 5 per cent of Rarotonga’s electricity needs. New Zealand’s support in the construction of the Rarotongan solar array further demonstrates New Zealand’s commitment to furthering use of renewable energy in developing companies.
